Isaiah 55:8 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD.
Have you ever wrestled with God about something? Have you ever felt that life was just too hard or maybe things weren’t fair? Maybe you have wrestled with God before because you do not completely see what He is doing at the moment. Or maybe you got mad at God because He did not answer a prayer for you.
If you have ever wrestled with God in any kind of way then I want to let you know that you are not alone. Actually, I believe that wrestling with God is a good thing and that we can become more mature in our walk with Christ as we wrestle with Him to gain more wisdom and knowledge.
It kind of sounds crazy, to suggest that we should question the God of the universe. Or argue with God about something that you do not agree with Him on. I will be honest and say that I have even gotten mad at God before and told Him exactly how I felt and why I thought that I had a better plan than He did. Like He didn’t already know what I was thinking anyways. The truth is, God wants us to question Him, so that He can teach us the things that He has for us.
Now let me explain why I think that wrestling with God is a good thing and why I believe that if you are not wrestling with God then, you should be
First off, It shows that we want to understand His ways and that we do not want to settle for our own understanding because we know that there is more. Since God has infinite intelligence and we have microscopic intelligence compared to Him we have no choice but to struggle to understand Him through reading, prayer, crying, studying, scratching our heads, kicking and screaming until we get some kind of answer or experience growth. Sometimes we get answers fast and sometimes it may take much longer than we like to see the answer. Sometimes we do not ever get answers to certain things. Whether we get an answer or not, God smiles at us when He sees that we want to know more about Him. And He knows what is in our best interest and what is not.
Wrestling with God often times brings about growth and clarity to situations, it also can help us gain a better perspective in life. During the time we are in the middle of the wrestling match, it is no fun, as a matter of fact it can be quite frustrating at times, but when we finally surrender to Him each time, He gives us little tips along the way. In other words, God speaks to us and gives us answers or clues as we show Him that we are willing to go through great depths and pain to understand His ways. It is no different than a parent trying to teach their kid the hard way. God knows that when we learn the hard way, it sticks and we will be more effective for Him, if we fight to gain His wisdom and knowledge rather than just making it easy for us.
Now, let me say that God’s wisdom and knowledge is 100% worth fighting for. One little glance or a tiny glimpse of His wisdom can help us avoid so much pain on this earth. Just a sprinkle of his knowledge is worth wrestling with Him because that sprinkle could be just what you need to make a life changing decision. The bible says in James 4:2, You want what you don’t have, so you scheme and kill to get it. You are jealous of what others have, but you can’t get it, so you fight and wage war to take it away from them. Yet you don’t have what you want because you don’t ask God for it.” Start asking God for things, wrestle with Him about it until you get some kind of answer. It may not be the answer that you wanted, but if God has anything to do with it, it will be a better answer than the one that you had.
Now let me encourage you if you are not wrestling with God, to get in the ring with Him.
Pick up your bible and begin to question the things in it. Learn why God does things the way he does them. Dig for answers to your questions that have been on the front of your mind. Talk to God about the things that worries you. Let Him know how you feel. I will even go so far to say, to respectfully try and prove God wrong so that you will in return learn His infinite wisdom and knowledge that He wants to give us if we will seek the answers with our whole hearts.
Matthew 7:7 “Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you.
