Becoming Aware of our Unawareness

Are you aware that you are unaware of all of your resources and capabilities? Do you realize that all of your God given potential has not being achieved yet?  Think on this verse for just a moment.

Proverbs 2:11, Because of lack of vision my people perish.

This verse has always been one of those verses that comes to mind when I get stuck in the rut of life. In other words, times when I am not growing, not moving forward, not living everyday to my full potential in which God has called me to. When I get to these seasons in my life I always try to step back and take a look at my activity, my attitude, the people around me, and most importantly my relationship with the Lord. Usually one or more of these things are out of balance. Over the years I have learned to catch myself when I begin to lose vision of where I am going. I have learned to catch myself because I have discovered something in life,  that has changed my life in terms of my growth. The word is called awareness. I have become aware of my unawareness.

Over the years I have learned to catch myself when I begin to lose vision of where I am going. I have learned to catch myself because I have discovered something in life,  that has changed my life in terms of my growth. The word is called awareness. I have become aware of my unawareness.

Many people do not grow because they have a lack of awareness. In other words they are not aware of their true potential or the resources available to reach their goals or the call that God has on their life. Another word for awareness is consciousness. Most of us live in a subconscious world. In other words, we rise out of bed and do not put much thought into our day and the minute we are faced with a conscious decision to make we have two choices, retreat or embrace it. Most people retreat, because it is uncomfortable. Our flesh wants us to stay in the subconscious

Our flesh wants us to stay in the subconscious mindset, because when we are here, we are not in control of our lives, instead everything around us is. In other words, either we are in control of our lives, decisions, actions, or others are in control of them. Most people stay here their whole lives because it is a comfortable place to be. We don’t have to think or become uncomfortable when we are living subconsciously.

It is not until we consciously try to do something do we become uncomfortable. Or in other words, “we only grow when we are uncomfortable”. For some reading this, you have never been aware of this until now and others may be aware but not fully aware or they would be busy growing. Then there are the very few that live in a constant state of awareness and control of their lives. These people are growing, in control of their lives, and usually are being watched and talked about by the ones that are not.

Let me try to illustrate in this way. Imagine someone that just bought an Iphone7, but all this person knew to do with the phone is to call and text. They were unaware that the phone had millions of different apps, the internet, could access the weather, navigation, take pictures, videos, etc…. but they did not want to learn the other things the phone was capable of doing because it is too hard, or it would take up too much time, or maybe they were too busy looking for more comfortable solutions or they were used to how they currently did things.  Now don’t you feel sorry for this person. I sure do! If this person would step out of their comfort zone just for a short while to new things they would see that they could save time and live in a world that they had only been dreaming about.

This is not any different than you and I when we are not aware of our potential and resources, but also stepping out of our comfort zone to get to our destination. It always feels scary when you are in that moment, but when we have taken the first step that scary feeling goes away and we are energized. This energy is called living!! When we are at this point we feel most alive and in control of our destination. This is where we all want to be. The key is staying aware of where you are at and consciously moving forward. The good news is that when we make a habit of living this way, we will eventually become comfortable being uncomfortable. Now that is where I strive to be.

Have a blessed day!

Derek
