Finding Rest for Your Soul

I felt the need to write a blog for the people out there that cannot find rest for their souls because of something they have done in the past.

Maybe you have done some pretty bad things in your life as most of us have and you just can not come to forgive yourself, then this is for you.

Maybe you have tried and tried to find peace but you can not seem to find it.

Maybe you have ruined a relationship, a marriage, lost friends, or maybe your children do not speak to you anymore because of poor decisions that you made in the past.

I want to encourage you today to rest and believe that your life can still count. You can get everything back that you lost. You can be restored!

You may say how in the world can I rest or why should anyone forgive me when I have done so much wrong to others and even myself?

Here are 4 steps that will help you to restore everything that was lost and find rest for your soul.

  1. Return to the Lord. The only one that can restore us is the one who gives life and that is God. So begin this journey by talking with the Lord about what is on your heart. He wants to bless you and restore you! But he can’t if you don’t allow him in your life. You are His child and He has unconditional love for his children. Remember God is all knowing and all powerful so, He can foresee what lies ahead. The instant that you begin talking with him about your situation, He will begin working on your behalf. That is right. As soon as you admit your faults to him, he forgives you. Like it never happened. Talk with him daily, and listen to His voice as He begins to lead and guide you. Read His Word daily, this is how you will often hear His voice.
  2. Forgive yourself. This is usually a tough thing to do when we are ashamed of what we have done but it is a must do before we can have restoration. Now that God has forgiven you and you are in a relationship with Him,  you must begin to forgive yourself. Remember, that you can’t love others genuinely if you don’t love yourself first. This may take a little time but it is possible. Changing our ways is how we learn to forgive ourselves. We cannot keep on the paths that we have been on that got us in the position that we are in and expect a different outcome. That is insanity. When you truly change and start becoming the person that you were created to be and the person that deep down that you know you can be you will begin loving yourself. Look at yourself in the mirror every day and say, “I forgive you” until you really feel it.
  3. Focus on Loving others. Once you have returned to the Lord, changed your ways and forgiven yourself, now you can begin restoring damaged relationships and earning trust back. This also may take some time but, time is all that you have. Make a decision to spend the rest of your life loving others. Don’t focus on what you have done or keep bringing up the past mistakes. Just begin loving others and eventually, your walk will match your talk. People don’t want to hear how someone has changed they want to see it and feel it. Don’t try to complicate it, just simply love others. That is it. And that is enough.
  4. Don’t beat yourself up anymore. Understand that we all make mistakes in life. There is not one person that has ever lived on this planet that has not done something that they regret. But we have to learn from our mistakes, no matter how BIG they are, and move forward. When you have learned from your mistakes then you can rest, because now you are better than you were before. That is all we can ask for, is to be better today than we were yesterday. Quit beating yourself up, you are a human, not a robot. Every time you start to think about the past, remember to shut it off and rest.

I hope this helps someone out there that is needing rest for your soul. Let me encourage you to never give up. No matter how hard it gets. There is a future that lies ahead for you that is better than any day you have currently lived yet.

An extra note: Please take the time to read Deuteronomy 20:2-10. I think that you will find encouragement in this passage. If you need other scriptures to read, please send me a message. I will be glad to send more. The Bible is full of stories of restoration.  Actually, to sum up, the Bible, it is one Huge story of redemption and restoration. So, just know that you are not alone. Just as God has restored many others, He will restore you as well!

God Bless.
