The Importance of Encouragement

If you are busy and forgetful like me, you have alarms set either on your phone or watch reminding you to do certain things that are important? I have several alarms on my phone. These alarms consist of, two wake up alarms, another is a reminder to pick up the kids from school,  and another one that reminds me to encourage someone today.

All of these alarms are very important to me. The last one may seem kind of strange, but it is important, so I make sure that I do not forget by setting an alarm. Each day I want to consciously find someone that I can encourage in some way. I have found that not only does this help others but it also makes me feel good as well.

So when is a good time to encourage people?

I have learned that if a person is still breathing then they could use some encouragement. I know I appreciate it when someone encourages me. So the answer is every day. You probably would agree.

So why don’t we do it more often?

Is it because we do not get it ourselves, so we do not feel the need to give it?

Is is because we think that the other person looks fine on the outside so they do not need it?

Or could it be because we just do not think about it?

Whatever category that you fall into, I want to challenge you today to set an alarm on your phone and start encouraging others every day.

Encouragement does not have to be totally verbal. There are many other effective methods that we can use.

How about sending a text, writing an email, creating a social media post, or even a simple positive gesture can go a long way, such as a smile or thumbs up.

You never know, your encouragement to someone may just get someone through a hard day. It may just spark a light of hope.

From my experience in doing this, I have found that the encouragement message that I send is usually exactly what the person needed at the time. This happens more often than not.

Here is an example:

I recently sent a friend of mine that I haven’t spoken to since high school a Facebook message that went something like this, Hey friend, I know we haven’t spoken in awhile, just wanted to say I hope you are doing well and wanted to give you a word of encouragement. Be strong and courageous. God has plans for you! He will never leave you or forsake you. Deuteronomy 31:6 Take Care. “

A few minutes after I sent this message, the individual responded with a really long message telling me about a situation that they were going through and how they were close to giving up. They said that they were planning on ending their life that day. Once they received this message, they felt that it was a message from God saying, everything is going to be fine. So they changed their mind. It has been a couple years now, this individual is now doing much better, happily married with 2 beautiful children.

This is one example of what an encouraging word can do. Even if you don’t hear a story like this one, doesn’t mean that your encouraging word didn’t make a difference. I promise it will make a difference. Not only in others lives, but yours as well.

I encourage you to make a conscious effort to encourage someone every day. I believe that we can change the world by doing this together. One boy, one girl, one person at a time.

God bless, have a great day!
